Genetic testing for Maine Coons

It is very important.
A single "broken" gene is enough to pose a high risk of developing problems, and there are others where two are required, meaning that being a carrier does not pose any threat.

Maine Coons have three dangerous breed-specific (found only in Maine Coons) pathological mutations: affecting the heart, spine, and blood.

I can confidently state that all animals or their ancestors in Maine coon cattery Kingcoons have been tested for Maine Coon genetic diseases.

HCM - hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: I haven't worked with this mutation for 10 years, as it is passed on in a dominant manner.

SMA - Spinal Muscular Atrophy: All animals in the cattery or their offspring have tested negative. This condition only develops if two defective genes are present.

PKdef - Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency, or simply put, genetic anemia. All animals in the cattery have been tested, and carrier-to-carrier matings are not allowed, as the condition only develops if a pair of mutated genes is present.
